Expensive, mediocre food

I went here just to meet some friends of a friend. I looked at the menu beforehand, and wasn't looking forward to paying the prices I saw online. This is sort of a dressy place, but I wore jeans, a nice plaid shirt, and tennis shoes without getting any odd looks.

The drinks are priced ridiculously high. Draft beers were ~$9 and cocktails ~$14. I chose to stick with water, as we were planning to goto a bar afterwards. The dishes are all small (and expensive) servings, because the restaurant encourages your table to share with one another. Here is the menu:

The food was OK, but I just couldn't enjoy it very much considering the price. It's not really my type of place to eat, but I'm sure other people enjoy it a lot. I'd rather go to Knight Restaurant in Burbank for cheaper, tastier, and larger servings when I'm craving Mediterranean food.

Cleo Restaurant Review

Cleopatra, personified in a huge picture of actress Theda Bara from the 1917 movie, welcomes you at Cleo in Hollywood, as does a courteous and efficient staff. She is the best decorative element in the mishmash of objects and forms that comprise the décor. There is no unity between the industrial high ceilings, the Monet-like painting at the bar, the open kitchen, the lamp fixtures, the chairs,...

Seriously. The margarita-ish tequila cocktail that has worms in the salt. SO. GOOD. We had a bunch of delicious appetizers, but the standouts were the beef kebab and the short rib...lots of oil / fat on that one, mostly because of the bone marrow, but...

The food was great. Had the tuna tartar, beautifully pair with olive tapenade and pignoli nuts; wished it was not served on a transparent small plate, seemed too homey. Skirt steak and seasoned beans was perfectly cooked, Almost memorable!! Negroni served in a Martini glass...
